Early Morning Fire Destroys Market, Other Businesses At Pioneer Boulevard And 163rd Street
By Randy Economy An early Sunday morning fire has destroyed up to four small businesses located at the corner of 163rd Street and Pioneer in Artesia. Members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a call at around 5:30 am at a longtime local community shopping center and found the structure totally engulfed in flames. The fire was contained within an hour and an investigation is now underway. Witnesses at the scene tell Los Cerritos Community News that neighbors began smelling smoke and then flames “spread like a matchbook on fire.” Destroyed was Cortez Market, a check cashing location and two other “mom and pop” type businesses. Four other businesses located on the same property did not receive any fire damage, but the smell of smoke was prevalent in the air at 3:30 pm Estimated cost of lost is not yet known. A private insurance representative, who did not want to be identified said “it looks like it will be well over a million dollars.”
