I own my home and live with renters. What insurance do I need?
Question by Justin K: I own my home and live with renters. What insurance do I need?
When I bought my home initially it needed work, so I bought homeowners insurance for myself since I was the only one living there. Since then I have rented three of my rooms out (I still live in the master bedroom) but have yet to tell my insurance agency. I know I need to, I want to be able to collect on policy but now that I have renters does that mean I can only get renters insurance?

Answer by Mark S
The short but honest answer is that it depends on the details of your situation. You need to speak with your agent as soon as possible.
Most likely you will be able to keep all of the coverage you currently have, and there will be an additional cost to add on the additional coverages you need as a landlord. And you absolutely need to get that taken care of ASAP. For example, if one of your tenants slips and falls down your stairs, and they decide to sue you – your current policy probably won’t cover it.

Why Parents Should Consider Personal Liability Insurance and Renters Insurance as Students Return to College, According to Next Generation Insurance Group
Boston, Mass. (PRWEB) August 12, 2011
Its insurance season for students returning to college. Renters insurance policies a popular purchase by parents for their college students protect personal property against fire, certain natural disasters, theft and vandalism. Next Generation Insurance Group (NGI), a specialty insurance company serving the unique life-stage risks of college students and young adults, offers one of the most comprehensive renters insurance policies for this demographic. A critical differentiator in NGIs renters insurance policy for college students is the inclusion of personal liability insurance, providing protection in case of bodily injuries to another person or damages to anothers property if an incident occurs within the students rented residence or elsewhere.
Social events, study groups, overnight guests, friends of roommates, campus activities, parties and more are commonplace at college and all present opportunities for accidents. Personal liability protection takes some risk out of the college social scene for the renter if he or she causes unintentional damage to their dorm or off-campus apartment.
Personal liability is a critical consideration when choosing a responsible renters insurance policy, said Bill Suneson, president, Next Generation Insurance Group. If someone is unintentionally hurt while on the renters property, the renter could be held responsible for related medical expenses. Weve seen simple campus accidents leaving the stove on and causing a fire in the dorm, or someone unintentionally hurt while in another students apartment that resulted in damages that would have been covered by insurance.
Next Generation Insurance Group offers renters insurance with personal liability protection directly through:
CollegeRentersInsurance.com, recommended by College Parents of America, the nations largest membership organization serving the needs of college parents, is dedicated to providing comprehensive renters insurance for the collegiate market.
GradGuard.com is the collegiate industrys first comprehensive, integrated insurance and lifestyle benefits solution.
NGIs renters insurance protects the stuff that goes with college living electronics, computers/tablets, clothes, furniture and other personal items; policies also include replacement cost coverage to easily replace critical items that have been lost or stolen. Personal property coverage is available up to $ 50,000 and personal liability coverage is available up to $ 300,000.

How to claim renters insurance?
Question by Test: How to claim renters insurance?
I have insurance on my laptop and my son has damaged it. Can I claim insurance on this and how it will effect on my credit history and future renters insurance.
Best answer:
Answer by acermill
Damages caused by those in your household will not be covered under your renter’s insurance policy. You would need a specific ‘laptop insurance policy’ for such coverages.
This repair will have to come out of your own pocket.

Does renters insurance cover being scammed?
Question by keithr2003: Does renters insurance cover being scammed?
I recently sold an item on ebay, and I suspect the buyer illegally paid for the item.
Thus i will have to reimburse paypal( im not sure if i was scamed yet, but the bidders account was banned 2 weeks after the sale.)
Could I claim the item was stolen from me since some horrible person used fraudulent funds to pay for the item.
There is coverage in my policy for forged checks, does this count.
Best answer:
Answer by Doug
You can’t claim the item as stolen since you would need a copy of the policy report to submit to your insurance in order to file a claim under your renter’s policy.
Depending on the value of the item and the costs to file in your state you may wish to sue the other party in small claims civil court.
The forged check coverage you mention relates to checks from your own personal bank account being stolen and used to buy goods and services that you did not authorize.
In the future, please consider waiting to ship items sold on Ebay until payments clear your bank, This is protection for you and the buyer if legitimate will also understand this practice.

Question by Ryan: Will renters insurance cover theft of motorcycle?
My motorcycle was locked up at my apartment in my covered parking, and some piece of crap stole it cut the chain and stole it. I thought I had full coverage but it turns out I have no coverage for theft (sucks I know) so they won’t cover my loss and i’m still making payments. I have 50,000 worth of renters insurance and I want to know if it is even worth trying to have them help me out with the loss. Anyone have this problem? anyone have any good advice? it would really help out a lot. Thanks. Oh and yes, I have made police report.

no your renter’s insurance only covers what’s in the confines of your dwelling. That will still need to be filed as a claim through your auto insurance. Sorry.

Mansfield Insurance Agency Offers Tips for New Renters in the Rhode Island and Connecticut Area
Westerly, RI (PRWEB) August 31, 2011
When people think of insurance, they probably envision health, home or auto policies that protect individuals major investments. However, how much would it cost to replace all of the belongings that people keep in their apartments? A lot, right? This is why the team at Mansfield Insurance Agency is comprised of experts in Connecticut and Rhode Island renters insurance.
Aside from obtaining proper renters insurance, Connecticut and Rhode Island residents can follow several simple steps to ensure that they and their possessions will be safe in their new apartment.
Individuals who live alone may consider renting an apartment above the ground floor in order to avoid the risk of a perpetrator breaking in through the windows.
Even if the apartment itself is nice, people should check out the laundry room and parking areas to ensure that they are clean and secure.
Renters should read the newspaper, which will give them a good idea of whether or not their area is experiencing spikes in crime.
In many cases, a lease will contain information about who has access to an apartment. Renters should read all of the contents of a lease before they sign it so they can ensure that their landlord will not be popping in regularly and that the locks will be changed before they move in.
Some property managers require that tenants obtain Connecticut or Rhode Island renters insurance since landlords are not responsible for any stolen or damaged items. Regardless of whether or not this is the case, smart renters can seek this type of coverage from a local agent who is familiar with the area in which their clients plan on living.
