This is my grandmother Julia Gekosky. I took pictures, audio recordings, and a few video clips on December 29, 2011. Julie or “J” as her friends call her, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s when I was a young lass (she was in her 70s) and it has been steadily getting worse. She is now 83 and I have just graduated college. My grandmother was… (is? was? is…) one of my idols. As a child there were moments where she was my best friend, there were brief moments where she helped my mother raise me, and she is the source of my most treasured comfort food addictions. To see how this disease has ravaged her mind scares me more than death. It makes it so that I don’t want to age, I don’t want my parents to age, I don’t want anyone to have to live like this. Last year, during Hurricane Irene (ironically, the name of a relative), Julie’s house in New Jersey was flooded not only by water, but also by hazardous fuel. Even though Julie had flood insurance (ever since it flooded during Hurricane Floyd), the company (which will go unnamed for legal reasons) refuses to pay for damages or any kind of alternative. The house is currently uninhabitable. Julie was moved to a nursing facility near my aunt, who had previously taken care of her in home. This disease has not only been horrible on its victims, but detrimental to the health (mental, physical, and emotional) of the caregivers and loved ones.
